I've never had to flash the firmware to remove the region coding, but this blog article gives a nice overview from a Mac perspective. It is possible to get around the region restriction, either using appropriate software (on Windows, AnyDVD can do it) or by flashing the firmware of the drive to remove it. I don't know how to change the region with a Mac as I don't have one handy to test with (sorry!) but to change the region in Windows 7 (for people who look at this answer later), follow these instructions: go to the properties of the DVD drive, click the Hardware tab, select your DVD drive there, click Properties button, go to DVD region tab, pick your region & click OK a couple of times. You can usually change it a set number of times (4 or 5, I forget which) before you get stuck with the last region you picked (though apparently you can get the manufacturer to unlock it for you). If you plan to show a Region 2 film in class, make sure you place your CTS work order a few days in advance.It is a property of the DVD drive, saved in the firmware of the drive. Choose New Work Order and then Equipment Request as the "Problem Type" and fill in any other info needed. To place a request to bring one into your classroom, create a work order through CTS. CTS has portable universal DVD players that will play DVDs from all regions. The instructor PCs in Library classrooms do not play Region 2 discs. You can also view VHS and Blu-rays in the viewing rooms. Please ask the Circulation Desk for access to our viewing rooms. In addition, the Library has a universal DVD player in our viewing rooms that will play all regions. The PCs in lab 1004C or the Reference Computer Commons will also play Region 2 discs, but you have to switch regions on the computer first. These will play Region 2 DVDs without you needing to do anything or change any settings. The all-in-one Dell computers in the DMZ commons are recommended. To play Region 2 DVDs, please use a Windows PC. At least one of these should open automatically when you insert a disc:
